Being energy efficient can make a big difference to the cost of your energy bill. Saving energy in your home doesn’t mean a big investment in energy saving technologies, or making lifestyle changes. Our 11 tips can make a massive difference to your monthly energy usage and save you money in the process.
Don’t leave appliances on standby and unplug chargers when not in use
If your appliance has a stand-by light, or is warm to the touch, it will be using energy. Although the average television set only costs £5 a year on stand-by, this can add up to a significant amount if you have multiple appliances plugged in.
Switch to energy saving light bulbs
Energy efficient light bulbs have come a long way. Modern variants produce as much light as traditional incandescent bulbs and even look similar. They last much longer, up to ten years in some cases, so you will also save money on the cost of replacing them too.
Check your boiler thermostat
Your boiler will often be set to maximum by default. This will typically be much higher than needed. Turning your thermostat down by 1°C can lead to savings of around £60 per year. Keeping your heating on for longer at a low level is more energy efficient than turning it on in short bursts at maximum.
Check your insulation levels
Most of the heat in your home is lost through the roof. Making sure your loft insulation is topped up to the recommended level can save up to £140 a year off your energy bills. Cavity wall insulation can save up to £160 per year. Washing at a lower temperature uses less electricity. Washing at 30ºC rather than 40ºC can reduce your cycle cost by a third. Switching to washing powder designed to work at a lower temperature will ensure your clothes are still cleaned properly.
Switch to a pressure cooker
A pressure cooker can reduce your cooking times by up to 50%. Despite a large initial outlay, this can add up to big savings in the future.
Plan when your heating is used
Set your heating controls to switch on 30 minutes before you arrive home and 15 minutes before you go to bed. This will prevent wastage and ensure your home is always warm when you need it.
Make sure your dishwasher is full
Ensure that your dishwasher is completely full before turning it on. Your appliance will use the same amount of energy no matter how full it is; by using it to wash half-loads, water and energy are wasted
Your home will be losing a significant amount of heat through windows and doors that are not sealed properly. You will be able to feel where heat is escaping, and buying strips to stop this is very cheap. If your home is single glazed, double glazing film is a great cost-effective alternative.
Use storage heaters efficiently
Storage heaters stay warm for a long time after they are turned off. Make sure you constantly check their heat levels and switch them off when you are comfortable.
Buy energy efficient appliances
Energy efficiency should be one of the things you look out for when buying new appliances. Check the label before you purchase and make sure you buy appliances of an appropriate size.
