A Preston award ceremony came under fire earlier this week after two national firms beat local competition.
The It Smiles Better Awards, run by Preston Business Improvement District (Preston Bid), is an opportunity to celebrate great work from local businesses and their employees.
Both local and national brands are encouraged to enter in a number of categories before the candidates are put to the public in a vote.
However, some members of the public were quick to criticise the voting decision after Nandos and Wetherspoon pick up ‘Restaurant of the Year’ and Best Pub respectively.

When people not from Preston try to take the piss out of the place it’s pretty hard to defend when you see that a Wetherspoons has been voted pub of the year & Nando’s restaurant of the year 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ pic.twitter.com/jRszk2rhwA

Preston BID has moved to remind everyone that almost 68,000 votes were cast by the general public across 17 categories.
