The Harris Museum is giving young artists the chance to fully curate their own exhibition.
The Harris Young Producers is a group of creatives aged 16-25 that meet weekly at the Harris.
It has been set up to allow the young creatives the chance to get experience curating and hosting events, programmes and workshops.
The project is a collaboration between The Harris and Blaze, an arts organisation led by young people to develop the next generation of creative producers.
The Young Producers are putting on their first contemporary art exhibition, MORE T’NORTH, which opens on 14th February.
MORE T’NORTH will be made up of art from emerging northern artists, most of whom haven’t featured in galleries before.
The aim of the exhibition is to go beyond the typical stereotypes and expectations of the North.
Anyone hoping to see the exhibition can expect to see art that will be “breaking the mould, and with specific meaningful pieces on the subject of gender.”
The artists are very excited about the chance to have their work featured in The Harris.
One of the artists, Shonagh Short, said, “I’m really excited to have my work shown at such a prestigious venue,
“I think it’s fantastic the Harris Young Producers is challenging out of date stereotypes about the North by showcasing new contemporary artists from the region.”
Another artist, Lydia Richardson, is from Preston and is relishing the chance to have work featured at the Harris, she said,
“Well it’s my first time featuring in an exhibition so I’m really excited to be part of it,
“Especially in my home town and I bloody love anything that celebrates northern culture.”
Most of the artists have never had their work featured in place as prestigious as the Harris, Ellie Brennan said,
“I’m very excited to be featured! It’s not like anywhere I’ve exhibited before,
“I’m used to city centre basements in Manchester, not the historical setting at the Harris.”
The MORE T’NORTH exhibition will be at the Harris from 14th February till 31st May. For any more information, check out the Harris website here.
