Rachel Coupe is looking for volunteers to help her provide free confidential 1:1 reading coaching for adults in Preston.
The teacher from Fulwood is hoping to help adults in Preston who have trouble reading but don’t have the confidence to join a class.
She was inspired to help people in her area after watching a Channel 4 TV show which explores adult literacy and tries to help adults who lack the basic skills:
“I’m a qualified primary teacher and teacher of reading. I had thought about volunteering to teach adults to read but there was no provision for one-to-one teaching of adult reading in the area. Then I watched Channel 4’s “The Write-Offs” presented by Sandi Toksvig. I was so moved to see how the group of adults on there struggled with everyday activities like shopping, I was inspired to help in my community.
“I found Read Easy UK online and saw that they successfully supported nearly 40 Read Easy groups in England and were looking to expand in The North West. They provide free, confidential 1:1 reading coaching for adults.”
Rachel has spent time researching and has found that there is a definite need as 7.5% of the population of Preston have problems with reading:
“I spoke to lots of local organisations to research the need and found there are 6,596 adults in Preston who struggle with everyday reading and wouldn’t have the confidence to join classes, or even tell their friends and family. Developing their skills will improve their chances in life and work. I presented my findings to Read Easy and now have their backing – I’m officially their Pioneer for Preston!
“I have to gather a team of volunteers who can help me get the group up and running. I’ve had support from family and friends and already have a few volunteers but there are a variety of roles to fill on the Management Team so if people want to join a friendly group at its exciting inception, this is a great, rewarding opportunity.”
She is on the lookout for volunteers in various roles to help her perform the classes and get the Preston group up and running:
“Although I welcome interest in any of our roles, I am currently recruiting for a Team Leader, Treasurer and Publicity / Social Media Organiser. Management Team roles require committed, organised, self-motivated people with good communication skills.
“There are various other roles, some with less time commitment so please get in touch for an informal chat to find out more about any aspect.”
