Evie’s Pedalling For Pennies Challenge To Support Local Children’s Hospice

A young girl from Horwich rode 71 miles on her little pink bike throughout March and raised a massive £675 for Derian House.

Evie worked very hard throughout the month to complete her cycling challenge to raise money to help other children.

Her dad, Simon Rutherford, explains why she wanted to do the challenge:

“I did my own lockdown running challenge back in October and since Evie was getting really confident on her bike, I asked her if she fancied doing a challenge herself.

“We had a look around at different local charities and we thought it made sense for her to do something to help other children. I showed her the hospice and the work that they do and she was really enthusiastic about helping them.”

Evie was out on her bike all the time to reach her target, she did need a little encouragement along the way:

“We set off riding three or four times a week, we did laps of our estate because it is fairly quiet and nice and smooth. Some of the nights, we would get a mile in and she would say ‘I want to go home daddy’ but I encouraged her and she would always stick at it and push a bit further.

“On the weekends, we would take the bikes out somewhere and find a nice cycle path. Some weeks she was riding three nights in a row but she was always really positive about it.

Simon and Evie couldn’t believe how quickly her fundraising page went up, at the time of writing, she has raised £685:

“We got the word out to family and friends and put it on social media and the money just grew so quick. From being at £100 it was soon up to nearly £700, we were really pleased.

“When I did my challenge, I raised around £400 so I was surprised to see Evie raise so much but I think people were touched by the sentiment of why she was doing it and she worked very hard, sometimes riding in the rain.”

They have kept up to date with the great work the children’s hospice does:

“Ever since she did the challenge, we have carried on keeping up to date with what Derian are up to and watching the videos they post on social media.

“I think it has been great for her to be really aware of children who are less fortunate than her, it has been a really good learning curve in several ways.”

After the challenge, Evie donated the bike she used for it to Derian to raise even more money.

You can still donate here to help Evie raise as much as possible for Derian House.
